How to Practice Spelling Words at Home (10 Minutes a Day)
Practice a little every day instead of a lot the night before. Have your child spell each word from memory, then check it straight away. Five to ten minutes a day across the week beats an hour on Thursday. Games make the daily part easy.
Spell from memory, not by copying
Copying a word five times mostly trains the hand to copy. Spelling sticks when a child has to rebuild the word from memory: look at it, cover it, write it, then check. Each correct rebuild makes the next one easier, and each mistake caught right away gets fixed before it settles in.
Spread it across the week
Monday: meet the words and spot the pattern (all of these have ai!). Tuesday to Thursday: ten minutes of practice. Friday: the test. Short, spaced sessions are how memory works best, and they're far easier to fit around dinner and bedtime.
Spend time on the wobbly words
By Wednesday most words are fine and three or four keep slipping. Put all the practice there. Say the tricky part out loud (b-e-c-AU-se), build it with letter tiles, or make a game out of just those words.
How to do it with Spellcove
- Paste the school list into the list maker, or pick your child's grade list.
- Play one voyage a day, about ten minutes. The game repeats the words your child misses.
- On Thursday, print a practice spelling test and check it together.
- Missed a word? Put it into tomorrow's list and play again.

Questions people ask
How long should spelling practice take?
Five to ten minutes a day is plenty for grades 1–3, and ten to fifteen for grades 4–5.
My child forgets words after the test. Is that normal?
Very. Bring last week's tricky words back into this week's practice. Spaced review is what makes spelling permanent.
