Free Spelling Games for Kids
Fourteen games where the spelling is the game, not a quiz you answer before you're allowed to play.
Free to play · no signup · works on phones, tablets and computers
Why games beat copying words out
Copying a word five times mostly practices copying. A word sticks when a child has to pull it out of memory, build it, and find out straight away whether it was right. That's retrieval practice, and it's the most reliable study method we know of.
Games are retrieval machines. A child chasing treasure will happily spell sixty words in ten minutes and ask for another round. In Spellcove, every mechanic is a spelling decision: which letter comes next, which spelling to fire at the rival ship, which fish carries the missing -igh.

Spelling games FAQ
What are the best free spelling games for kids?
Look for games where spelling drives every move, that adapt to your child, and that have no ads between questions. We wrote a guide to choosing one.
Are spelling games good for 2nd graders?
Yes. Second grade is all vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea) and r-controlled vowels, and pattern games like Cannon Gaps and Chunk Fishing are built for exactly that. Start with the 2nd grade words.
Is the spelling game really free?
Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. The Spellcove app is the paid version for iPhone and iPad. It adds every word read aloud, offline play and a parent progress view.

Take the cove with you
The Spellcove app has everything you can play here, plus the parts that need a real app: every word read aloud so kids can practice alone, offline play for car rides, a parent view of which words have stuck, and the full treasure collection.
