How to give a spelling test at home

  1. Read the word once, clearly.
  2. Say it in a sentence: “The rain fell all night.”
  3. Read the word again, then wait. No sounding it out for them.
  4. Check together straight away. Fixing a mistake while it's fresh is when the real learning happens.

Then let them play

Missed words go straight into the game: the list maker turns them into a voyage, so tomorrow's practice is just those words.

Spelling test FAQ

How many words should be on a spelling test?

10 to 12 in 1st and 2nd grade, 15 to 20 by 5th grade.

Should I say the word in a sentence?

Yes, especially for homophones (there, their). The sentence tells the child which word you mean.

Is the spelling game really free?

Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. The Spellcove app is the paid version for iPhone and iPad. It adds every word read aloud, offline play and a parent progress view.

Take the cove with you

The Spellcove app has everything you can play here, plus the parts that need a real app: every word read aloud so kids can practice alone, offline play for car rides, a parent view of which words have stuck, and the full treasure collection.
