Spelling Test Practice That Actually Works
The best spelling test practice is taking practice tests: hear the word, write it from memory, check it right away. Do a short one on Monday to find the tricky words, practice those, and retest on Thursday.
Test early, not just on Friday
A quick test on Monday shows which words your child already knows. That's usually half the list, and it frees the week for the rest. Testing is also practice in itself: every time a child retrieves a word, it gets easier to retrieve next time.
Practice the misses, in a new way
If a word was missed, don't just re-copy it. Say the tricky part out loud, build it with tiles, put it in a game, or write it in a sentence. A different route into memory helps it stick.
Retest with shuffled order
On Thursday, give the test again in a different order so the words aren't remembered by position. Anything still wobbly gets one more round on Friday morning.

Questions people ask
How do I help my child who hates spelling tests?
Make the practice tests tiny (three words) and the game the main event. Confidence goes up as the misses go down.
Should I give the answers right away?
Yes. Check each word immediately so a wrong spelling doesn't get practised in their head.
