Spelling Activities for 2nd Grade

The short answer

Second grade spelling is about vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow), bossy r (ar, or, er, ir, ur) and adding -ed and -ing. The best activities make kids choose between patterns: sorting, hunting and games that ask which team?

,

Sorting activities

Give kids a pile of words (rain, play, tail, day) and two headers (ai and ay). Sorting makes them notice where in the word each team lives. Repeat with ee/ea, oa/ow and the r teams.

,

Word hunts

Give a reader and a highlighter: find every ai word on the page. Kids see the pattern in real text, which is where it needs to transfer.

,

Games and quick drills

Cannon Gaps (fire the missing vowel team) and Chunk Fishing (hook the right chunk) are built for 2nd grade. Two minutes of each makes a great warm-up.
